Musicologists and experts predicted that the digital advancements in music would result in much fewer physical hard sales. Although digital music has existed for over two decades, it was only in its primitive years for the last half of the noughties. Nowadays, these companies are gigantic and lead the market. As we accelerate through time and inspect how people consume their music today, it is almost exclusively via streaming platforms. Of course, this includes websites like YouTube, but Spotify and Apple Music are the world’s two biggest music streaming platforms. You can choose both according to Spotify Or Apple Music?
The Rise of Technology in Music, Gaming & Finance
Technology constantly moves with the times and pushes ahead with remarkable innovation. For example, you only need to look at how the digital gaming industry has risen alongside many of the music streaming services we see online. Cryptocurrency is another sector starting to enter many industries. I mean, haven’t tried bitcoin slots yet? or have you never booked a flight ticket with cryptocurrency? Well, those are already possible in our digitalized reality, although tech giants like Spotify and Apple Music don’t allow such payments yet.
Spotify
With over 200 million paying subscribers, Spotify is a colossus in this industry. With nearly half a billion active users who stream music on their platform every month, the Stockholm-based company has risen from humble beginnings to become one of the great dynasties in music.
In the mid-noughties, the idea of a music streaming service generating hundreds of millions of dollars in monthly profit would not have been earmarked as a wise business move. But unfortunately, music piracy exploded in this period as file-sharing sites began to host music on a gigantic scale. Once these websites were shut down, legitimate companies like Spotify moved into the space to provide a platform where listeners could access their little jukeboxes on their smartphones. Spotify’s advertising features are forward-thinking and have people discussing them worldwide on social media.
One prominent example is the “time capsule” playlist, a throwback to some nostalgia tracks based on your algorithm, which is often frighteningly accurate. In addition, the “Wrapped” feature breaks down your most played songs and artists at the end of the year and lets you know where you rank among your top artist’s listeners.
These are just two reasons why Spotify is so popular, it engages its user base and allows users to follow each other, create playlists for each other and has always focused heavily on the ability to connect users across the platform so it can also act as a social media tool.
When compared with Apple Music, Spotify has the edge in a few departments, most notably when it comes to active users, of which it is estimated to have more than double.
Apple Music
With over 70 million worldwide users, Apple Music is just one branch of the phenomenally successful tech company. As the world’s biggest company- Apple has had its sights on more significant projects over the years. However, their streaming service is still top-rated.
Before Spotify started to gain a grip on this industry, the most popular method of music was listening to music on an iPod, and you would go to the iTunes store, download your track and sync it to your iPod. This highly successful model gave Apple great success and was one of the driving factors behind the astonishing profit they experienced in the mid to late noughties. From this position, it was difficult to envisage them losing their market share and Spotify taking the crown.
Apple Music follows the same subscription-level service. However, they have since expressed an interest in becoming more of a media hub instead of just a music streaming service. They want to cover a wide range of media, including videos and podcasts and try to make up some of the ground that Spotify has ahead of them. Podcasts are the latest trend, and everybody seems to have one; they have many positives and are cited as an avenue to boost your self-confidence, with plenty of other self-help benefits.
Although it hasn’t been around near the same period, Apple Music has grown its user base to a reasonably modest level. However, they have already given up a lot of ground on Spotify in this short period. Given how many resources they have at their disposal, it would take a fool to write off Apple, but Spotify has the edge regarding visibility and branding.
